Nursing Concepts – NR501 Concept Analysis

Concept analysis (CA) is a commonly  custom writing used method to identify and explore concepts. The most effective CA results when the chosen concept, purpose, and method of analysis are aligned.

The nursing profession is a dynamic one and nurses treat patients from different cultures. This requires them to have a cultural humility.

Purpose

The purpose of the NR501 Concept Analysis is to provide nursing students with an understanding of how nursing theory is used in a variety of practice settings. This includes education, executive advanced practice, informatics and healthcare policy.

To accomplish this, this paper will use the step-by-step method of concept analysis outlined by Walker and Avant (2010). Literature Review

According to McEwen & Wills (2014), concept analysis is an effective and practical tool in recognizing and defining a concept. It also helps to identify overused and ambiguous terms by providing a more defined, structured and clear definition.

The process of conducting a concept analysis requires the identification of antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents. Antecedents occur prior to the occurrence of the concept; consequences are events that take place as a result of the occurrence of the concept.

The concept of self-care is a complex and multifaceted topic. It involves many elements that affect the health and well-being of patients. These include a proactive lifestyle, education, and personal interaction.

The NR501 Concept Analysis is an assignment where students apply a process to identify and analyze ONE concept that supports nursing theory. NR501 Concept Analysis is the process of identifying defining attributes and empirical referents associated with selected nursing concepts. It is a process used to identify similarities and differences between concepts and is important for several reasons.

The defining attributes of the concept self-care include education, proactive lifestyle, and personal interaction. The patient is responsible for his/her health through a variety of self-care practices including: diet, exercise, medication, stress management and re-assessment skills (O’Shaughnessy, 2014). This helps patients to have a sense of control over their experience which improves their health outcomes. In addition, the patient must know how to communicate with their healthcare provider and how to engage in their treatment plan.
